In the United States, the media's portrayal of women politicians was notably impacted by sexism, emphasizing the way they look as well as their roles as mothers and wives instead of highlighting their political competence. For instance, Sarah Palin's beauty was utilized to sabotage her trustworthiness as a politician, with degrading tags such as "Barbie." Furthermore, the media often focused on her roles as a mother and wife, questioning her capability of balancing her duties toward her family and her profession as a politician. Consequently, the media does not sufficiently discuss her political qualifications and policy proposals (Carlin & Winfrey 2009, 330-335). Another example is Hillary Clinton who was subjected to negative stereotypes during her 2008 campaign to run for presidency. Clinton was often portrayed as an "antiseductress," reminding men of past affairs gone wrong. Also, the way she dressed, especially her pantsuits, was made fun of. She was also described as old and cold and as a “scolding mother”(Carlin & Winfrey 2009, 331-334).
This video discusses how women are harshly criticized are judged by anything but her merits. She is judged by her appearance. Kamala Harris and Hilary Clinton speak on their experience with this.
